A National Tragedy

We here at Rantings send out our thoughts and prayers to those who lost children,  family members, and friends in the Connecticut school shooting.  The political ramifications can wait, but when the time comes:

1: THE MOST IMPORTANT-SCHOOL SECURITY NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED IN ALL SCHOOLS!!!!!!!!!!

2: We need a national discussion on mental health issues.

3: Guns-what civilian needs an assault rifle, and high capacity magazines?

Let us not forget the 20 innocent children lost, and the heroic Principal and teachers who gave their lives to keep the kids safe, and the ones who survived. Newtown will never be the same…..

Hats Off...

To GOP Senators Lindsey Graham and Saxby Chambliss for saying that they would be willing to abandon the no tax increase pledge foisted on the Republican party by activist Grover Norquist over the past 20 plus years.  It might mean they get primaried when they’re up for re-election, but it shows that some Republicans are willing to set aside party matters to attempt to do something for the good of the country!  Hopefully this is a good sign that we will get some cooperation in Congress and the Fiscal Cliff will be avoided.

Election Post Mortem

Now that the election is over, President Obama has been re-elected, The Democrats control the Senate, and the Republicans control the House, as before.  Both parties need to check their egos at the door, come together as Americans, and do their jobs, not just for the benefit of their respective parties, but for THE WHOLE COUNTRY!   Compromise is not a dirty word, people!  both sides have good ideas, it is not good to disregard them.  The American voters elected you to get something done,  not 4 more years of gridlock.  There are things that need to get done ASAP, such as fixing the economy and immigration reform.
To the Republican party:
If you want to make inroads with Women,     black, and Latino voters, you need to lay off the insults and vitriol!

Get Out And Vote!

For our American friends:

If you’re registered to vote, get out tomorrow and do it!  If you’re a Republican, Democrat, or Independent,  it doesn’t matter, it’s your responsibility as an American citizen.  In some places the race may be close, so every vote counts!

Political squbbling is going too far!  Are differences in one’s beliefs worth losing a friendship over? NO!   All views should be respected.

Remembering 9-11

Today we remember the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York, the Pentagon, and possibly one on the White House.  This is a day to put aside partisan politics,  religious differences, focus on those  who lost their lives that horrible day, and try to figure out how to make sure this never happens again.  It was nice seeing how the whole country came together for a few weeks afterwords, it’s just sad that it didn’t last very long!

102. Do not ride trains. The railroad was built with government financial assistance.

The fact is, we pay for the lifestyle we expect. Without taxes, our lifestyles would be totally different and much harder. America would be a third world country. The less we pay, the less we get in return. Americans pay less taxes today since 1958 and is ranked 32nd out of 34 of the top tax paying countries. Chile and Mexico are 33rd and 34th. The Republicans are lying when they say that we pay the highest taxes in the world and are only attacking taxes to reward corporations and the wealthy and to weaken our infrastructure and way of life. So next time you object to paying taxes or fight to abolish taxes for corporations and the wealthy, keep this quote in mind…

“I like to pay taxes. With them, I buy civilization.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

There Are No degrees of legitimacy……

When it comes to rape!  Excuse us Congressman Akin, but your claim that women can’t get pregnant by “legitimate” rape was a total insult not to just women, but men too!  Rape it rape. It is a horrible violation of a person’s safety and life, and the so called doctor that you go your information from should lose his license for coming up with such nonsense.  And you wonder why the Republican party is considered to be anti-woman?  People like Mr. Akin are the ones that make it look so!

History

Whether you’re from The North or the South, the Civil War was a terrible chapter in American History. States’ Rights and not slavery was the biggest cause of it.  No matter the cause, there were thousands that died during it and they should be remembered as well.  This is one subject that still rubs sore spots.  If you had ancestors that fought in it, be proud!

Playing Chickn With Free Speech

No matter which side of the Same Sex Marriage debate you’re on, the Chick-Fil-A Controversy is a perfect example of the First Amendment in action:

1:  CFA Ceo Dan Cathy’s right to be against gay marriage and to express that opinion was not interfered with.

2: The right of those that agree with him to support him and voice their views was not interfered with

3: And the right of those that disagree with Mr. Cathy’s and Chick-Fil-A’s views to protest and  make their         opinions known were not interfered with.

So either way, free speech won the day!

A Few Questions about Gun Control

In the aftermath of the Colorado shootings:

1: What non military person needs 6,000 rounds, even if he’s a hunter?

2:  What nonmilitary person needs an AK-47 or AR-15?

3: Why should someone be able to buy guns and ammo online without some sort of background check?

4: Should a non military/ non police person be able to legally buy body armor and bullet proof vests?

5: How many more lives would have been lost if as the gun nuts would have had it , there would have been more armed people in the theater?

6: Is there anything we can do about this without interfering with the 2nd Amendment?

Be Prepared

Here are some tips to be prepared in case something causes a prolonged power outage in your area:

1: Make sure you have plenty of batteries for flashlights and radios
2: Invest in a good generator. A Small one can run your refrigerator, freezer, and a small light. Don’t forget, be careful where you run it, to avoid Carbon Monoxide.
3: if you have an electric stove, It would be wise to invest in a good charcoal or gas grill, so you can cook, or a Coleman camp stove.   See the above warning for ventilation.
4: Stock up on canned foods, get a hand can opener.
5: If you can’t get a generator, don’t open your refrigerators or freezers unless absolutley  needed. Invest in some large coolers.
6: Seek shelter if there’s a Heat or Cold Problem
7: To pass the time, treat it like a camping trip.  Find a good book to read or a game to play.
8: Stock up on water!

The V Word

To the Speaker of the Michigan House Of Representatives, who a couple of weeks ago had a female member of the House silenced because during a speech about the Republican Party’s obsession with Abortion and Women’s Rights,  she said “Thank You Mr. Speaker For Being Concerned About My Vagina”:

It’s only a body part!  Your party is obsessed with the female body in a bad way!

What would you do?

After reading about the Texas father that killed the man that was sexually assaulting his 4 year old daughter, here is the question:  Could you do that, or in your mind 2 wrongs don’t equal a right, and the legal system run its course.  It’s a tough call!

Parental Responsibility

Here  is an article about an 835 Pound teenager who had to be cut out of her house.   Even though in the long run it was her responsibility to watch her eating habits and her weight, do you think  her parents should bear any responsibility in this, and should get in legal trouble?  You’d think that they would notice that she was gaining an immense amount of weight and take her aside and come up with a plan of action such as diet and exercise.  That is if her weight was due to an eating problem. As always, we here at Rantings advise you not to make any hasty judgments until the whole story is told.

Is it Justice?

Do you think that 30 days in Jail, Probation, and Community Service was punishment enough for Darun Ravi, the Rutgers student who used a webcam to spy on this roomate Tyler Clementi.  He caught Tyler on video making out with another man, and the trauma of being vidioed perhaps led to Tyler’s suicide. As always, there are 2 sides to every story, and we’ll never know what was going on in Tyler’s mind.

Someone Is Going To Get Killed

There’s nothing wrong with athletes wanting to win, but there has to be a limit.  With the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, and Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels admitting that he hit Washington Nationals rookie phenom Bryce Harper with a pitch on purpose, competititiveness is going to a new level, or maybe a low point.  Come on guys, it’s just a game!  Someone is going to get a career ending injury or worse if you start putting winning and money before safety and common sense!

Bad Taste

It is totally disgusting: A talk radio host telling a man who suspects his daughter may be gay to have one of his friends rape her straight, and a pastor telling his churchgoers to beat their kids if they act like they may be gay.  Even if it were a joke, it is condoning rape and child abuse, which is intolerable in itself, no matter your stance on gays.  We here at Rantings are all for free speech, but people, please, watch what you say, someone could take you seriously,  and some kid could get hurt or killed.

From Our Friend Pastor Kat

Op-ed: Katharine Royal - Berean Baptist pastor's sermon dangerous to gay youth

By Katharine Royal

On Sunday, the pastor of Fayetteville's Berean Baptist Church preached about why his flock should vote for Amendment One.

Many have heard and seen his shouted exhortations about "squashing like a cockroach," the first signs of gender-variant behavior in children. Fewer have seen his searing denunciation of transgendered persons as "an affront to God."

Voting for Amendment One, he declared, was their Christian duty. To do otherwise, would be "S-I-N. Sin." It would give aid and comfort to homosexuals and open the door to same-sex marriage.

The pastor preached for an hour, barking almost every sentence like a military order.

I have counseled at least three GLBT young adults who have attended this church. They all said they heard similarly hateful messages there, which not only drove them away, but also pushed them into depression and self-harm, even suicide attempts.

I know this destructive pattern well. As a bisexual woman with a call to the ministry, I heard many similar sermons declaring this to be wicked and impossible. They drove me to undergo "reparative therapy" in a well-known "ex-gay" ministry.

It didn't work and left me both "un-repaired" and bearing numerous physical and psychological scars.

My own recovery and self-affirmation led me in 2011 to launch a service group, Operation Bullyhorn, for those affected by the lethal epidemic of bullying.

Originally, I thought it would be only an online support group. Instead, it has blossomed into an international network. Chapters have sprung up in several countries.

I spend 40 or more hours weekly counseling youth and family members. I contact schools, groups and child protective services. I put together literature, events and rallies.

The good news: This work is spreading and has helped save many lives.

The bad news: It often comes too late. I have had to console many families and friends of those whose lives were cut short by bullying.

Like Kenneth Weishuhn, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, a gay teen hounded to death in early April by Facebook hate groups and cellphone threats.

Or 10-year-old Jasmine McClain of Chadbourn, who hanged herself last November after being tormented about her clothing and shoes.

There aren't reliable statistics. Yet that it's an epidemic seems clear: I talked with families of at least 50 teen suicides last year, and 80 percent involved anti-gay bullying.

Tragically, extreme religious views like those shouted at Berean Baptist Church last weekend figure in all too many of these cases.

By themselves, their stories are hard enough to hear. What's even more disturbing right now is how passing Amendment One - which, after all, was what the Berean Baptist sermon was about - will encourage and give "a special dispensation" to ratcheting up such verbal and physical violence against those condemned as living outside "God's plan."

I know all too well where such "pro-family" preaching and legislation ends. Too often, it brings a family together - at the morgue.

The Epistle of James, Chapter 3, says, "a large forest can be set afire by a tiny flame! And the tongue is like a fire."

The homophobia and transgender bashing unleashed in this local church to boost Amendment One are like throwing lethal lighted matches in every direction of our tinderbox society.

By Monday, facing criticism for his violent tirade, the preacher insisted that all the talk of punching and cracking wrists of children was just a joke.

But I'm not laughing. Are you?

Katharine Royal is co-pastor of Diversity In Faith: A Christian Church for All God's Children, a new Fayetteville congregation, and founder of Operation Bullyhorn.

An Interesting Scenerio-Courtesy of Daily Kos

WE'd Love to hear your opinions about this!

An innocent man is sentenced to death, and is led into the death chamber on the appointed day.  At the very last minute, he manages to escape from the restraints using a weapon he smuggled in and kills the guards present who are trying to assist in his execution.  Just seconds later - so that there is no time for the prisoner's execution to be carried out by other guards - a reprieve is called in, which would have been too late if the prisoner had cooperated.  The prisoner surrenders and is returned to his cell, and during the course of the reprieve, he is proven innocent and all previous charges against him are dropped.

Now let's assume the prosecutors and judges in his state are conservatives, and decide to charge him with 1st degree murder for defending himself against the guards who were trying to murder him.  Let's further assume the juries in the state are conservatives and convict him, sentencing him to death.  The Supreme Court upholds his conviction and death sentence 5-4, ruling (as Antonin Scalia actually has in real life) that proven innocence is not a legal basis to avoid punishment and thus the prisoner was obligated to die from the original conviction, meaning that he had no right to defend his own life and is therefore guilty of murder.  I.e., he must die now because he would not die before when the state wanted to kill him, even though their justification was proven false.

What we find in this all-too-plausible scenario is that the true nature of capital punishment is revealed - it has nothing to do with criminal justice, and everything to do with asserting the power of the state to take the lives of its citizens.  Now, a practical politician would probably not allow such an execution to take place because there would be significant public sympathy for the guy - a pardon would be likely, if not from a governor, then from a President.  But the logic of capital punishment nonetheless would assert that the state would have the authority to kill him for defending his own life, because he allegedly had no right to do so when the state had ordered his original execution.  And it boils down to whether or not a human life is state property, or indeed property at all - a question that additionally reveals the unmitigated hypocrisy of conservatives and most libertarians who are in favor of or indifferent to capital punishment.

I will say it clearly: Defending one's own life is a fundamental, absolute human right not subject to any conditions.  That can lead to real complexities in war or other scenarios with armed combatants who are free to act and threaten each other, but there is no imaginable scenario in which a prisoner who is in custody and under restraint may be legally or morally killed - there are no ambiguities to that.  It is cold-blooded murder for a person in custody deprived of any capability of defending themselves to be strapped down and their life taken.  To argue otherwise is to claim that the immorality of private murders is only because they lack state approval, which is an inherently nihilistic and totalitarian argument.

But let us extend the scenario even further, and say that the prisoner did not defend his own life - let's say a member of his family killed the guards to prevent the execution taking place.  If the executioners were home-invasion robbers, no one would dispute the family has a right to defend its members.  But is the action illegitimate simply because a killer wears a badge and carries a piece of paper allegedly giving him the authority to commit cowardly, cold-blooded murder?  Or let's say the execution does take place and the innocent prisoner is murdered by the guards - something that has happened several times in the past few years - would it be legitimate for the family of the prisoner to seek revenge on the guards, or would their desire for revenge be less legitimate than the families of the other victims who had originally demanded the prisoner's death out of a false belief in his guilt?  Does the grief of a convicted perpetrator's family entitle them to less sympathy than the grief of victims' families - does the guilt of their family member transfer to them by blood or emotional connection?  No moral person would claim that, and yet our "justice" system implicitly holds that to be true.

A capital murder trial is basically the other 300 million people of US society appointing 12 of their members to decide whether to kill 1 of their members.  How is this legitimate?  Let's reduce it to the absurdity that it is: Instead of 300 million, what about a group of 10 million?  Or 1 million?  Or 1 thousand?  What about two people in a group of three deciding to kill the third?  At what number of participants does a conspiracy to commit murder become a function of "justice"?  How do twelve people have any greater claim to such authority than two?  If the claim is made that the social contract implicitly agrees to give other citizens this power, then it must also be argued that it is legitimate for the Mafia to kill its own members since their social contract also implicitly acknowledges this authority.  In fact, we must say that about all criminal organizations engaged in murder, and also extend the logic to people who merely associate with them in any way since they're aware of what could happen.

OR we can say that human life is an absolute right beyond any authority to destroy, and the only situations where lives can be taken is where the only other choice is to allow other, less culpable lives to be taken - defense of life.  Granted, conservatives in their infinite perversity will often try to twist this principle into arguing that making an example of convicted killers saves lives, but aside from being objectively untrue, they betray once again how they think: They do not place any inherent value in a human life, only in its utility to themselves and to groups they identify with.  But this is not part of any remotely defensible definition of justice: A person's right to exist is not predicated on their political utility in keeping others in line, and they cannot be punished for the suppositional future crimes of others.  Once again, we see the deranged hypocrisy of the right in its love for collective punishment and objectification of individuals in order to control groups.

Basically, capital punishment is indefensible on every level there is, and its level of tolerance in a society indicates how advanced or how degenerate it is.  Those who have abolished it - and I mean sincerely abolished it, not merely substituted extrajudicial killings for overt process - prove themselves among the most civilized.  Those who have followed a trend of increasing restrictions and rare practice are at least proving their commitment to progress and decency.  But those parts of our country who have been unrepentant state killers of people in their custody, let alone reveling in it, prove themselves barbaric and unaccountable, and will likely threaten the safety and security of the rest of the United States as time goes on.

Tips For Saving Gas

Gas prices are climbing these days, so here are 12 tips for conserving gas courtesy of care2.com:

We can conserve gas with some car maintenance steps. For example, we can get 6 to 20 percent higher mpg with a properly tuned engine. Keeping a mileage record will tell us when our gas mileage is slipping, which is a signal for a tune-up.

Here are 12 more tips for how to stretch a tank of gas.

1. You can easily take care of a few items without going to a service station. One of them is the air filter. A clogged air filter leaves your engine gasping for breath and means you’re probably running with a “rich” mixture, that is, more gas and less air. Many department and auto stores carry air filters, and they are simple to change. A clogged air filter can cost you 1 mpg. Replace your air filter regularly.

2. Dirty oil cuts back engine efficiency, so make sure your oil is changed according to the car manufacturer’s recommended schedule. You can change your own, and buying your own oil is much cheaper. There’s a drain plug under your engine that will come out readily with a wrench. Have a bucket ready to catch the dirty oil, and remember to dispose of it safely.

3. If your fan belt is too tight, your engine is working too hard and wasting gas. The belt should give a little to finger pressure when the engine is not running. if it doesn’t, you can easily adjust the tension with a wrench.

4. Badly worn spark plugs can cost you as much as 2 mpg. This is probably a job for a trained technician.

5. The car has been a way of life for most Americans. There are alternatives. These include mass transit, bike paths, and carpools.

6. Heavier cars are more costly to run. A reduction of 200 pounds in automotive weight typically improves fuel economy by nearly 5 percent.

7. Use the air conditioner in your car as little as possible. It uses a lot of gas. Roll down the windows and get some fresh air!

8. Using cruise control can save gas. If you drive on the open road often, staying at a constant speed will save fuel.

9. If you are taking a trip, start early in the day while traffic is light. Plan to stop for meals at times when traffic is heavy.

10. Don’t let your car idle for a long time to warm it up. Also, don’t let your car idle for more than a minute after it is warmed up—this idling wastes more gas than restarting your car.

11. Do not rev the engine and then quickly shut your car off. This wastes gas. It also pumps raw gasoline into the cylinder walls. This can wash away a film of oil that protects the cylinders and will increase engine wear.

12. Check your tires. Your owner’s manual has important information on your tires, including the correct air pressure that should be in them. Underinflation of your tires can cost you as much as 1 mpg. Radial tires have 50 percent less road resistance, so they give you 3 to 19 percent better mpg.

Tragedy In Florida

Before anyone takes any actions because of the Trayvon Martin shooting case, let the Police  do their job and investigate it.  There are so many different stories about what happened, so we might not really know what happened. What we do know is that a young man is dead, and if you want to honor his memory, don’t go off and do something that you might regret later.

The War On Women

Political and Religious leaders are trying to tell women how to run their lives, whether  it’s abortion or Contraceptives. This struggle has been going on for years and It will go on for more years. These people should leave medical decisions between a woman and her doctor. Enough said…..

The Loss of Moderation

With the annoucement that Maine Senator Olympia Snowe will not seek reelecton to a 4th term, the list of moderates im Congress is getting thinner.  These days, on both sides, it's either "my way or the highway", and compromise is becoming a bad word.  Because no one is giving in, we have gridlock, and nothing is getting done.  While the Democrats can mind having a pro-life member of their caucus such as Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, a Pro choice Republican would be thrown out of the party.  It used to be that compromise was a way of life, and members of congress would regularly cross the aisle to work with members of the other party.  But with the advant of talk radio and the 24 hour news cycle,  partisan hostilities are getting worse.  Where the republicans of the 50's and 60's had moderates like Nelson Rockefeller, we now have extremists like Rick Santorum and others.  And on the Democratic side, This writer would love to have a lot more Senator Caseys and Manchins, willing to buck leadrship and work for the country and not party

Rush, Shut Your Mouth!

Rush Limbaugh has really outdone himself this time! The conservative talk show host showed his class by calling Sandra Fluke a  Georgetown University Law Student a slut and prostitute because of her testimony at a congressional hearing having to do with the contraception/insurance controversy.  2 points: contraceptives have other uses besides birth control. 2: Remember that when you judge a woman. Rush has been bullying people for over 20 years, calling people who disagree with him names.  Thankfully, his sponsors are dropping him by the dozens, and perhaps soon he’ll be off the air and back into his hole.

20 Obvious Lies That Will Shock Conservatives (If They Ever Bothered To Read A Book Or Two)

March 6, 2012

By Justin "Filthy Liberal Scum" Rosario

Whenever conservative bloggers try to be clever and “expose” liberal myths, you just know it’s time to pull out the rain coat, ’cause there’s gonna be a whole lot of bullshit flying around. The latest example of this is John Hawkins’ “20 Obvious Truths That Will Shock Liberals” whose real title should be “20 Easily Disprovable Stories That Conservatives Chumps Buy Hook, Line & Sinker.” Let’s take a look shall we?

1) The Founding Fathers were generally religious, gun-toting small government fanatics who were so far to the Right that they’d make Ann Coulter look like Jimmy Carter. That’s nice. They also thought leeches could cure illness. Does that mean we should stop advancing medicine or building on their ideas for a better future? I’ll keep this mind the next time some gibbering buffoon demands that “original intent” be the only guide for interpreting the Constitution. The original intent of the Founders was that slavery was just fine, black people counted as only 3/5 of a man and women couldn’t vote at all. Let’s get back to basics!! Warning: you might find that women and African-Americans have some objections.

As for “small government?” Pure ignorance. They had laws dictating what kind of public behavior was acceptable and what size barrel could be used to transport food stuffs. Small government? Don’t make me laugh.

2) The greatest evil this country has ever committed isn’t slavery; it’s killing more than 50 million innocent children via abortion. Tell that to a slave. But, in reality, abortion is a very complicated issue. Far more complicated than the bumper sticker mentality of your typical conservative can process. I’ll help conservative make their case, though. All a conservative has to do to convince me that they truly consider abortion to be the murder of a human being is explain to me why they do not have a funeral for miscarriages and demand a death certificate be issued.

Good luck with that.

3) Conservatives are much more compassionate than liberals and all you have to do to prove it is look at all the studies showing that conservatives give more of their money to charity than liberals do. Only a conservative can equate money to compassion. You’re pro-death penalty, pro-war, anti-gay, anti-universal healthcare, anti-Medicare, anti-Medicaid, anti-Social Security but you give some money to a church that might use it to feed the homeless but could just as easily use it (and millions more) to deny gay couples the right to marry. Therefor, YOU are more compassionate than a liberal who wants an end to war and poverty.

hah…ahahah…ahahahahahha…bwahahahahahahaAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

(the author must take a break to catch his breath)

4) When the Founding Fathers were actually around, there were official state religions and the Bible was used as a textbook in schools. The so-called “wall of separation between church and state” has absolutely nothing to do with the Constitution and everything to do with liberal hostility to Christianity. Ah, the old “America is a religious country” bit. And to a conservative, that can only mean “Christian.” Here’s a fun fact about the Founders: to them, religious did not mean “Christian,” a very subtle nuance that seems to escape conservatives even when they read quotes from Jefferson like “Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law” or from the Treaty of Tripoli signed in 1797 that states: “As the Government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Musselmen (Muslims); and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.”

That is directly from the mouths of the people who created the country. It literally cannot be stated more clearly than that.

5) The biggest problem with our economy today is Barack Obama. His demonization of successful people, his driving up gas prices, his regulatory overload and threats to increase taxes have terrified businesses into hunkering down, refusing to spend money, and declining to hire new people. Replacing him would do more than any government policy to spur economic growth. Funny how American gas prices have mirrored the fluctuations of the world market precisely. I guess President Obama controls the entire oil market single-handedly. It’s also amazing, how, despite the fact that we’re supposed to “drill, moron, drill,” the United States is now a net oil exporter. That’s right, we sell more oil than we take in but gas prices are still going up. I have yet to meet a conservative that can honestly explain why that is. As for refusing to spend money, why is it that no conservative can ever tell me WHAT corporations should spend the money on? Hire more people to do…what? Fill demand? They’re already filling what demand there is. More employees won’t fill it any better. Despite this, the unemployment rate has steadily (if slowly) declined under Obama as opposed to skyrocketing under the conservative policies that the right pretends didn’t cause the crash in the first place.

6) Not only are conservatives more patriotic than liberals, but most American liberals “love” America in about the same way that a wife-beater loves his wife. In 2008, a black man was elected to the White House in a fair and open election. It was not a suspiciously close vote that required the conservative Supreme Court to stop a recount and give the election to the Republican candidate. The Democratic Party won a super majority in the Senate (but only for eight months) and a large majority in the House. What did the “patriotic” right do? Immediately started to scream that it wasn’t fair and it wasn’t right and they wanted their country back. The GOP (ab)used the filibuster more than any other time in history, death threats against the president spiked and right-wing militias dramatically increased in numbers, along with foiled plots to start a revolution. Right Wing politicians started talking about secession and “second amendment remedies” and Rush Limbaugh stated, publicly and repeatedly, that he hoped Obama would fail.

If THAT’S what a conservative considers “patriotism,” they’re delusional. Patriotism is more than wearing a lapel pin. It’s more than polishing your gun and swearing to shoot the first federal agent that steps foot on your land. It’s more than wrapping yourself in the flag while screaming “I hate that nigger!” at Fox News. It’s more than being against something. You have to stand for something besides your own petty little needs. Conservatives have forgotten this, if they ever knew it the first place.

7) Out of every 100 cries of “Racism” you hear these days, 99 are motivated by nothing other than politics. That would be because they are directed at Republican politicians and pundits passing around racist emails, calling President Obama a skinny little crackhead or man-child and demanding to see his “real” birth certificate because being born to an American mother and a Kenyan father magically makes you “not American” despite several past (white) presidents having a foreign national as a parent. When the Right stops using the Southern Strategy of racial resentment that they have flat out stated that are using, we’ll stop calling them racist.

8) Anyone paying income taxes is certainly paying his “fair share” — and then some — compared to the people who pay nothing. When the rich paid a 90% marginal tax rate, the rich still got richer but the economy boomed. The less the rich paid, the richer they got but the worse the economy did. So let me ask you this: How is it “fair” when the rich take the most from the economy but give less, as a percentage of their profits, than the rest of us back to that economy?

9) You don’t have a “right” to anything that other people have to pay to provide for you. Then you do not have the right to police protection, a fire department or even a 911 emergency line. You do not have the right to clean air or safe food. You do not have the right to a military to protect you from foreign invasion. You do not have the right to a single thing that is government-run. Oh? What’s that? You pay taxes so you deserve all of those things?

Exactly, you stupid bastard. If everyone else was not chipping in, i.e. “paying to provide for you,” you would not be able to afford all that nifty stuff. It’s called “socialism” and only very stupid people think they are completely self-sufficient.

10) If we can ask people to present an ID to buy alcohol, drive a car, or get on an airplane, then asking them to present identification to vote is a no-brainer. Only a conservative could debase the right to vote by comparing it to getting drunk. Liberals hold their franchise to a higher standard, apparently. Tell me again how liberals are the ones that hate what America stands for?

11) There’s absolutely nothing that the government does smarter, better, or more efficiently than the private market with roughly equivalent resources. Except be held accountable to the people of the United States of America. The conservative push to privatize everything is the rush on Lemmings going over a cliff. It is a fact that terrifies conservatives that when you add a “for profit” motive to basic necessities like health care and military contractors, the inevitable result, proven again and again, is corruption, theft of taxpayers dollars on a grand scale and reduced service. As long as the bottom line is the true goal, we, the people are a secondary consideration. Unless, of course, you want to make the argument that a multinational corporation has the best interests of the consumer in mind.

Good luck with that, too.

12) The biggest problem with education in this country is liberals. They fight vouchers, oppose merit pay, refuse to get rid of terrible teachers, and bend over backwards to keep poor kids trapped in failing schools. The Gordian Knot of education reform has so far eluded both liberals and conservatives. Guess what, though? No Child Left Behind was an abject failure. You know what else doesn’t work? Cutting school budgets in an attempt to “prove” public education doesn’t work. Vouchers haven’t provided better results but it HAS exacerbated the problem. Try again.

13) Fascism, socialism, and communism are all left-wing movements that have considerably more in common with modern liberalism than modern conservatism. Oh noes! Socialism! Communism! Fascism! Conservatives don’t know what these words mean so they lump them all together!! And they’re scary words!!! Communism is when the government controls the means of production and dictates what gets produced in what quantities. Mainstream liberals do not advocate this. Socialism (the american version, at least) is when everyone gets to enjoy the fruits of out collective labor. The interstate highway system is SOCIALISM. National monuments and parks are SOCIALISM. The public education system is SOCIALISM. Community colleges are SOCIALISM. The police and fire departments are SOCIALISM. Medicare is SOCIALISM. Social Security is SOCIALISM. My god! The word “social” is right there in the name!!!

Let me know how many of those SOCIALIST programs you’re willing to do without.

Fascism is a movement predicated on rabid nationalism (America is for REAL Americans), racism (White Power), isolationism (build the dang fence!), political violence (militias) and wars of aggression (Iraq). Now, which political movement does that sound like? Sure doesn’t sound like any liberals I’ve ever heard of!

14) The Democratic Party was behind slavery, the KKK, and Jim Crow laws. It was also the party of Margaret Sanger, George Wallace, and Bull Connor. It has ALWAYS been a racist party. Even today, white liberals support Affirmative Action and racial set-asides because they still believe black Americans are too inferior to go up against whites on an even playing field. My god! You’re right! I Agree completely. The Dixiecrats were a bunch of racist scumbags. They did fight against equal rights for blacks. Those Democrats were terrible, vile racists!

Hey, did you know, that after the signing of the Civil Rights Act, all of those racist Democrats that we just agreed were absolute scum left the Democratic Party? Yeah, they became Republicans.

History didn’t stop after the 1960s.

15) A man with good morals who falls short and becomes a hypocrite is still a far better man than a liberal who can never be called a hypocrite because he has no morals at all. And what lack of morals is that? Do liberals commit more crimes? “Blue” states, by and large, have a lower crime rate than “Red” states. Do we get divorced more often? Again, Red states outstrip Blue. Do we get pregnant at a younger (unmarried) age? Sing with me now, “Red trumps Blue!” Do liberals threaten political violence on a regular basis the way conservatives do? Nope. Who commits the most hate crimes in the country? Liberals or conservatives? Who encourages unsafe sex, thus increasing the number of abortions and the transmission of STDs? Conservatives. Who cheer the death penalty knowing, for a fact, that innocent men get executed? Conservatives. Who wanted to continue the war in Iraq that saw tens of thousands of children killed by American bombs? Conservatives.

Seriously, you think conservatives are moral? Why? Because you’re Christian and everyone knows that all liberals hate Jesus? There are serial killers out there that display a healthier set of morals than the freak show that is the Fox News audience.

16) The most dire threat to America’s future and prosperity in the last 150 years hasn’t been the Nazis, the Soviets, or Al-Qaeda;, it’s the spending and overreach of our own government. You mean the out of control spending of the Republicans? I agree! Reagan roughly tripled the deficit. Bush 42 actually tried to curb it and was punished by his own party for doing so. Clinton balanced it two years in a row and was on track to erase the national debt in a decade. Bush 44 sent the deficit into the unheard of territory of $1 trillion+ with his $700 billion tax cut, two wars and the Medicare Part D corporate giveaway. None of which were paid for or offset. We still have those tax cuts, one war (now a part of the budget like it should have been the whole time) and Medicare Part D. How is it Obama’s fault again that the deficit is outrageous?

Just as history didn’t stop in the 1960s, it also didn’t just start when Obama was sworn in. Almost 30 years of the conservative one-two punch of “cut taxes and deregulate” under the guise of “trickle down” have crushed the economy. But let’s blame the black guy!!

17) Greed isn’t someone wanting to keep more of what he earns; it’s people demanding a greater share of money that someone else earns. Greed isn’t when you want to secure the health and prosperity of others; greed is when you put your own self-interest above the good of the whole.

Conservatives have isolated themselves in a bubble of rhetoric in which no one is accountable to anyone else. That is not how a society works. It is not how human beings work. It’s not even how the Bible they claim to worship works. It is, however, how a child thinks. The right suffers from infantilism. They even throw temper tantrums when they don’t get their way in the form of the Tea Party and filibusters. Time to grow up, kiddies.

18) Most of the time in American politics, the liberal “victim” is really a bad guy who is absolutely delighted by the opportunity to pretend to be “offended.” Interesting hypothesis. Of course, you must mean that “a bad guy” is someone who has been insulted, belittled or discriminated against because of their race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. They sure are “bad guys” for taking offense! The nerve of them, wanting to be treated with respect!

On the other hand, conservatives thrive on being offended when they’re told they can’t insult, belittle or discriminate against others because of their race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

Only a conservative could feel oppressed because they can’t inflict their hate on others.

19) Jesus Christ was not a conservative, a liberal, or a politician. He was also not a capitalist or a socialist. Still, you can say this: Jesus drew sharp lines about what’s right and wrong, he wasn’t tolerant of what the Bible categorizes as sinful behavior, and there’s absolutely no question that he would adamantly oppose abortion and gay marriage. Really? Please cite, chapter and verse, where Jesus says he is against gay marriage and abortion. While you’re struggling to find a verse you can creatively interpret to mean “protect the unborn” and “persecute fags,” here’s a few verses that clarify Jesus’ stance on capitalism as practiced by the 1%:

”Matthew 19: 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24: And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

“Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.

I think it’s quite clear what Jesus thought about the mindless acquisition and hoarding of wealth that is THE defining characteristic of American capitalism.

20) When you demand that other people fund your sexual escapades by buying your contraception, your sex life becomes their business. Ok, make you a deal. We’ll stop pestering insurance companies about contraception when you stop making laws against homosexuals. Think you can do that? Think you can stop making other people’s sex lives your business? No? What a shock. Conservatives are hypocrites. I never would have guessed.
